Arigna Mining Experience

📍 Arigna, Roscommon

🏛️ Attraction

Last updated: 3 March 2026

Overview

Nestled in the rugged hills of north Roscommon, the Arigna Mining Experience is Ireland’s first museum dedicated to coal mining and the only underground tour in the country that is fully wheelchair‑accessible. Visitors descend into a former working mine, guided by former coal miners who share personal stories of life beneath the earth from the 1700s right up to the mine’s closure in 1990. Above ground, a modern exhibition space showcases photographs, documents and mining tools, while a café and gift shop overlook the sweeping landscape of Lough Allen and the surrounding five‑county “Hidden Heartlands”.

History

Coal extraction in Arigna began in the early 1600s under the direction of Charles Coote and continued for four centuries, feeding the iron‑working furnaces of nearby Sliabh an Iarainn and even contributing to Dublin’s iconic Ha’penny Bridge. Ownership passed through the United Irishmen, the O’Reilly brothers and local families, each leaving a mark on the community that grew around the mine. By the 1990s the seam was exhausted and the mine shut, but the site was reborn as a cultural destination. The original narrow tunnel – once only four feet high – has been widened and deepened, allowing safe public access while preserving the authentic feel of a working coal seam.

What to See & Do

  • Guided Underground Tour – The 45‑minute descent takes you through the main tunnel, now illuminated and fitted with sound effects that recreate historic blasting. Former miners act as guides, recounting daily routines, safety rituals and the camaraderie that defined life underground. The constant temperature of 10 °C (50 °F) provides a cool contrast to the Irish summer above.
  • Arigna Mining Exhibition – After resurfacing, explore an extensive display of historical documents, photographs and mining equipment. The exhibition also explains the geology of the area, detailing the sandstones, siltstones, mudstones and coal measures that made the seam unique.
  • Renewable Energy Centre – A newer addition demonstrates how the region is transitioning from coal to sustainable power, linking past and future energy narratives.
  • Café & Gift Shop – The on‑site café offers hearty lunches and snacks with panoramic views of Lough Allen, while the shop stocks locally‑made souvenirs, from hoodies emblazoned with the Arigna logo to replica mining lamps.
  • Scenic Walks – The site sits on a hilltop that provides breathtaking vistas of the surrounding countryside. It also marks the start of the Miner’s Way and Historical Trail, a 118 km network that threads through Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo for those who wish to extend their visit with a short hike.

The centre is a short drive from Carrick‑on‑Shannon and Sligo, making it an easy addition to a day exploring the Hidden Heartlands. Advance online booking is strongly recommended during the summer months and school holidays, as tours can fill quickly. While the underground environment is well‑lit and widened, visitors with severe claustrophobia may find the enclosed sections challenging, though most families report the experience as exciting rather than frightening.

For up‑to‑date event information – such as the seasonal Santa’s Underground Grotto or special group programmes – visit the official site.
