What is a Seniors Card?

Published on 5 March 2026

The Seniors Card is a private discount scheme for Irish residents aged 60 and over. It gives holders access to a wide range of discounts from participating businesses across the country, from hotels and restaurants to dental practices and retail shops. Unlike many other senior benefits in Ireland, the Seniors Card is not means‑tested, making it available to anyone who meets the age criteria.

Eligibility

  • Must be an Irish resident aged 60 years or older.
  • No income or asset test – the card is open to all eligible residents.
  • The card costs €50 (or €53 including postage and packaging).

How to Apply for a Seniors Card

Applications are made online via the scheme’s website. You will need to provide:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Mobile phone number
  • Payment details for the card fee

Once the form is submitted and payment processed, the card is posted to your home address.

Using Your Seniors Card

  • Find discounts – Browse the full directory of participating businesses on the Seniors Card listings page. The site is searchable by location and type of service.
  • Show your card – Present the physical card (or a digital copy, where accepted) at the point of sale to claim the discount.
  • Combine offers – Some businesses allow the Seniors Card discount to be used alongside other promotions, but it’s worth checking with staff.
  • Keep it safe – The card is not replaceable for free; a replacement incurs a fee, so store it securely.

Sample Discounts

  • Clayton Hotel Sligo – complimentary tea/coffee and a scone on arrival
  • Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa Cork – 10 % off for card‑holders
  • Clifden Station House Hotel – 10 % discount on B&B rates
  • Kenmare Bay Hotel & Resort – 10 % off
  • Patrick St Dental, Dublin – 50 % off selected dental treatments

Free Travel Scheme for Seniors

In addition to the Seniors Card, Irish residents aged 66 and over can apply for the Free Travel Scheme, which provides free public‑transport travel on buses, trains, DART services and certain private operators. Eligibility criteria include age, receipt of specific social‑welfare payments or disability status. Applications are made through local Intreo Centres or Social Welfare offices.

Medical Card for Over‑70s

People aged 70 or over may qualify for a Medical Card, granting free access to a range of health services. Eligibility is based on income thresholds (€550 per week for a single person, €1 050 for a couple). Applications are available via the HSE website or by phone.

Other Benefits and Entitlements for Seniors

Beyond the Seniors Card, seniors in Ireland can access several additional supports:

  • Household Benefits Package – electricity/gas allowance and a free TV licence for those aged 70 or over (and some under‑70s).
  • Housing Aid for Older People Scheme – grants for home repairs and adaptations.
  • Carer’s Support Grant – financial help for full‑time carers of older people.
  • Living Alone Increase – extra weekly payment for lone‑parent welfare recipients.
