Overview
Belvedere House Gardens and Park sits on the tranquil shores of Lough Ennell, just eight kilometres north‑west of Mullingar. The estate spreads over 160 acres of rolling parkland, a restored Victorian walled garden and a network of woodland walks that total six kilometres. A visitor centre, café, gift shop and an interpretative area make the site comfortable for families, history buffs and nature lovers alike. Whether you come for a leisurely stroll, a cultural deep‑dive or a special event, the grounds offer a blend of natural beauty and 18th‑century drama.
History
The house began life in the early 1700s as a hunting and fishing lodge for Robert Rochfort, the first Earl of Belvedere. Rochfort, notorious for his cruelty, earned the nickname “the Wicked Earl”. His turbulent personal life – imprisoning his wife for three decades and suing his brother for a massive debt – left a legacy of both scandal and grand ambition. To showcase his wealth, he commissioned architect Richard Castle (who also worked on Westport House and Powerscourt) to design a modest Palladian mansion that nevertheless boasts fine oak panelling, elaborate plasterwork and sweeping lake views.
Rochfort’s most flamboyant response to family rivalry was the construction of the Jealous Wall, a towering folly built to hide his brother George’s larger house from sight. The wall, resembling the ruins of a medieval abbey, is one of three ornamental follies on the estate; the others are a Gothic Arch and an Octagonal Gazebo, both tucked among the woodland paths.
In the 19th century the estate’s owners added a Victorian walled garden, a classic example of formal horticulture that has been painstakingly restored in recent years. Today, Belvedere is a public asset, drawing over 160 000 visitors annually and serving as a hub for community projects, festivals, and educational programmes.
