Overview
Bundoran Golf Course sits dramatically on a rugged headland overlooking Donegal Bay, forming part of the famed Wild Atlantic Way. Designed by the legendary Harry Vardon, the 18‑hole, Par 70 links offers panoramic 360‑degree vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, the Dartry Mountains, the Main Beach, Tullan Strand and the iconic cliffs of Slieve League. Whether you are a seasoned player or a casual enthusiast, the course’s “golfer‑friendly” layout combined with the ever‑present sea breeze creates a memorable round that feels both challenging and rewarding.
History
Founded in 1894, Bundoran Golf Club is one of Ireland’s oldest golf institutions. The original design by Harry Vardon – a five‑time Open Champion and celebrated course architect – was guided by his philosophy “to give pleasure to golfers of all degrees”. Over more than a century the club has hosted generations of players, including the late Christy O’Connor Senior, whose long tenure as club professional left a lasting legacy. The course has retained its classic links character while benefitting from careful modern maintenance, ensuring that the historic spirit remains evident on every fairway.
What to See & Do
- Signature 11th hole – A spectacular par 4 that demands an accurate drive onto the fairway followed by a long‑iron to an elevated, undulating green. The hole frames the North‑West Atlantic coastline, delivering one of the most photographed views on the course.
- Two loops of nine – Golfers can choose to play the full 18 holes or enjoy a shorter round on either the front nine (1‑9) or the back nine (10‑18), perfect for a quick game after a day of exploring the town.
- The 19th bar and Pro Shop – The clubhouse houses a fully stocked bar where you can unwind with a drink after your round, and a Pro Shop offering clubs, bags, apparel and accessories.
- Spectacular scenery – From the first tee to the eighteenth green you are treated to sweeping panoramas of Donegal Bay, the Main Beach, Tullan Strand, the Dartry Mountains and the distant cliffs of Slieve League. On clear days marine life such as dolphins and seals can be spotted along the coast.
- Proximity to town – The course lies just off the Main Beach on the grounds of the Great Northern Hotel, a few minutes’ walk from Bundoran’s bars, restaurants and nightlife, making it easy to combine golf with a vibrant evening out.
- Year‑round play – Open throughout the year, the course remains playable even in the damp winter months, with the sea breeze adding an extra tactical element when the wind picks up.
- Base for a Donegal golf tour – Bundoran’s central location makes it an ideal hub for exploring other renowned Donegal links, such as Donegal Golf Club at Murvagh and Strandhill Golf Club, both within a short drive.
