Overview
Castlefreke lies on the Atlantic coast of West Cork, just south‑west of the village of Rathbarry (also known as Castlefreek) and a short drive from Clonakilty. The landscape is a mosaic of shifting white dunes, stabilised grey dunes, the coastal lagoon of Kilkeran Lake, and the Castlefreke Forest – all forming the Kilkeran Lake and Castlefreke Dunes Special Area of Conservation (SAC). From the dunes you can see the Long Strand beach, the Galley Head Lighthouse and the sweeping Wild Atlantic Way coastline. The whole area is co‑managed by Coillte, Cork County Council and private landowners.
History & Background
The name Castlefreke derives from a 15th‑century tower house originally owned by the Barry family. In the 17th century the Freke family acquired the estate, rebuilding the castle in 1780 and later adding the impressive 30‑ft Lord Carbery’s High Cross (erected 1902) that still crowns Croaghna Hill. Fires in the early 20th century left the castle a ruin; it was used as a military barracks during The Emergency (World War II) and partially dismantled in the 1950s. A descendant of the Evans‑Freke line repurchased the site in 2005 and is now restoring the castle and its demesne walls. Scattered across the forest are the ruins of two churches (17th‑ and 19th‑century) and a graveyard, adding cultural depth to the natural setting.
