Overview

Cavan Adventure Centre operates from the islands of Inishmore, just outside Butlersbridge in County Cavan. Designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), the site sits within the UNESCO-recognised Cavan-Leitrim Geopark and forms part of the Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands tourism route. Since opening in 2008, it has developed into a practical hub for outdoor recreation, environmental education and low-impact wellbeing. The centre caters to families, schools, corporate groups and independent travellers looking to engage with the lakelands landscape without leaving a heavy footprint.

What to Do & Experience

Water-based Adventures

  • Kayaking & Canoeing – Guided and self-guided paddles cross Lough Oughter to Clough Oughter Castle, a medieval island fortress. The roughly 2-km route passes reed beds and open water, with all-weather kayaks provided.
  • Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) – Boards are available for hire on calm sections of the lake, suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
  • Boat Hire – Traditional rowing boats are available for families preferring a relaxed pace.
  • Family Water Park – An inflatable splash zone with jumping platforms runs during peak summer months, designed for younger children under supervision.
  • Paddle to Killykeen Forest Park – A short water route connects directly to the 240-hectare forest, where visitors can disembark for walking trails or coarse fishing.

Land-based Activities

  • Greenway Cycling – The centre connects to the 15-km Cavan-Leitrim Greenway, a traffic-free route through lakeside woodlands and open fields. Mountain and hybrid bikes are available for hire.
  • Bushcraft Days & Woodlands School – Instructor-led sessions cover practical survival skills, fire-making, shelter building and sustainable foraging, with a strong emphasis on responsible land use.
  • Archery & Team-building – Purpose-built ranges host family challenges and corporate away-days, with coaching provided for all ability levels.
  • Hiking Trails – Marked loops range from flat lakeside paths to moderate forest tracks. Interpretive signage covers local geology, tree species and conservation efforts.

Wellness & Relaxation

  • Yoga Platform – An elevated wooden platform set among the trees hosts guided sessions. The quiet woodland setting makes it a popular spot for morning practice.
  • Eco-Wellness Retreats – Overnight packages combine gentle outdoor activity, mindfulness workshops and locally sourced meals, designed for visitors seeking a digital-detox break.
  • Biodiversity & Wellbeing Days – Seasonal programmes focus on the SAC’s protected habitats, blending light exercise with guided nature observation.
  • Café & Picnic Areas – The on-site café serves hot drinks, sandwiches and gluten-free options. Designated picnic tables are spread across the grounds for self-catered visitors.

Wildlife & Nature

The SAC designation means the surrounding habitat is actively managed to protect native species. Red squirrels are frequently spotted along the woodland edges, and habitat restoration work directly supports their population. An active badger sett on the property offers rare nocturnal viewing opportunities, while Irish hare are commonly seen at dawn, particularly from the yoga studio windows. The lake attracts over-wintering waterfowl and raptors, making the lakeshore hides useful for birdwatchers visiting in autumn and winter.

History & Sustainability

The centre was established in 2008 with a clear mandate: deliver adventurous outdoor experiences while actively protecting the local environment. Early partnerships with local schools led to the creation of the Woodlands School and a series of guided geology walks. Sustainability quickly moved from a supporting concept to a core operational principle.

Under the leadership of Sustainability Champion Nuala McCann, the centre implemented a comprehensive carbon-reduction strategy, installed renewable energy systems and introduced waste-to-compost schemes. These efforts earned the site Sustainable Tourism Network Gold status in 2025, alongside specific awards for energy & carbon, nature & culture, waste & water, and people & business. The centre’s programmes remain aligned with the Fáilte Ireland Climate Action Programme and the wider Sustainable Tourism Networks Ireland initiative.
