Rain in Cork tends to settle in for the day rather than pass over, so the picks here are weighted towards things with a roof. In the city, four of them sit within a short walk of each other: the English Market, trading on the same site since 1788 under its cast-iron and stained-glass Victorian roof; Saints Peter and Paul’s Church on a lane off St Patrick’s Street, free to enter, with a 36-tonne Carrara marble altar; and out at the UCC campus, the Honan Chapel with its eleven Harry Clarke windows and the Glucksman gallery hanging over the Lee. All four are free, which makes them easy to string together without committing to anything.
East of the city, the harbour towns carry the rest of the list. Midleton Distillery is the most reliably dry option on the page — a guided tour through the pot still house, including the 75,000-litre one — and it needs booking, as does Blarney Castle to the north-west. Cobh gives you two in one stop: St Colman’s Cathedral, free and open, with its 49-bell carillon overhead, and the Queenstown Story in the old Victorian railway station on Deepwater Quay.
Be realistic about the part-outdoor entries. Spike Island is a 15-minute ferry from Cobh with a self-guided element, Fota Island is an open-range wildlife park, and Blarney’s stone queue stands in the open air. In heavy rain, keep those as second choices.
