🏛️ Attraction

Last updated: 21 May 2026

Overview

Perched on the wooded slopes of the Holywood Hills, Culloden Estate & Spa operates as a five-star sanctuary where 19th-century ecclesiastical grandeur meets modern Irish luxury. Once the official residence of the Lord Bishop of Down, the estate now spreads across 12 acres of manicured lawns and mature woodlands. Guests enjoy sweeping vistas over Belfast Lough and the County Antrim coastline, alongside a comprehensive wellness centre, three dining venues, and 98 individually styled rooms. It is a destination that balances quiet reflection with active exploration, just minutes from Belfast.

History & Architecture

The current mansion dates to 1876, designed by architect William Robinson as a Gothic-revival residence for the Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore. Built from Scottish stone with a distinctive castellated entrance tower, the building retains its original stained-glass windows, gilt-framed mirrors, and ornate fireplaces. An original crest carved from Glasslough sandstone still marks the facade. After decades of changing hands, Hastings Hotels acquired the property in 1969. The estate’s long-term stewardship culminated in a major refurbishment programme that carefully restored historic features while introducing contemporary comforts, ensuring the palace feels both authentic and thoroughly modern.

Rooms & Suites

Every guestroom is designed to frame the estate’s natural surroundings. Interiors blend period details with clean, contemporary lines, featuring King Koil ‘Cloud’ mattresses and marble bathrooms equipped with deep soaking tubs and rainfall showers. Many rooms open directly onto private garden terraces or capture panoramic views of the Lough. For those seeking extra space, the Palace Suite offers one of Ireland’s most celebrated bedroom experiences, complete with a private sitting area and dedicated concierge service.

Dining Experiences

The estate’s culinary programme spans formal dining, relaxed pub fare, and leisurely afternoon tea:

  • Vespers Restaurant – Located at the estate’s highest point, this fine-dining venue serves modern Irish cuisine. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame uninterrupted views across Belfast Lough.
  • The Cultra Inn – A welcoming, log-fire-lit bar and restaurant focusing on hearty bistro dishes. It also serves breakfast until 11:30.
  • The Crozier Lounge – An elegant space for afternoon tea, cocktails, or a quiet drink after exploring the grounds.
  • Zest Restaurant – Situated within the spa complex, Zest offers light bites and a refined menu, and hosts the signature Spa-tisserie experience, which pairs a wellness treatment with afternoon tea and champagne.

Spa & Wellness

The ESPA-certified spa serves as the estate’s relaxation hub. The hydrotherapy circuit features a Linear Vitality Pool, Tylarium, eucalyptus steam room, rainforest shower, Jacuzzi, and sauna. Treatment rooms cater to everything from deep-tissue massage to advanced skincare therapies. The recently upgraded fitness centre offers sports yoga classes and modern equipment. Guests can also book private couples’ suites or dedicated pedicure rooms for a fully personalised wellness day.

Grounds & Outdoor Pursuits

The 12-acre estate is designed for leisurely exploration. Winding paths lead through secluded woodlands, manicured lawns, and stone terraces. A coastal route skirts the edge of Belfast Lough, making it ideal for morning runs or cycling. Golfers can arrange tee-times at nearby championship courses, including Ardglass Golf Club for a traditional links experience. For a quick change of scenery, Ballycultra beach is a short walk away, offering a sheltered stretch of sand perfect for a seaside stroll. The estate’s proximity to Belfast also means cultural attractions and dining in the city centre are easily accessible.

Weddings & Celebrations

Culloden Estate & Spa is an established choice for weddings, corporate retreats, and private events. The Grade I/II listed ballroom and surrounding gardens can accommodate up to 480 guests. Indoor spaces include the Stuart Suite, Robinson Suite, and Holywood Suite, while the Holywood Terrace provides an outdoor ceremony option for smaller gatherings. A dedicated events team handles everything from bespoke catering menus to day-of coordination, ensuring seamless execution for both civil and religious ceremonies.
