Overview
A 19th-century Marquis of Sligo built a fishing lodge in this corner of Connemara, County Galway, and named it Delphi, after the home of the Oracle in Greece, because the steep glens reminded him of it. Under the mathematician Alec Wallace the lodge later became a celebrated fishing house-party, and the name spread to the whole valley: three lakes – Glencullen, Doolough and Finnlough – strung beneath the Mweelrea Mountains, feeding the Bundorragha River down into Killary Harbour, one of only three glacial fjords in Ireland. The valley sits just south of Delphi Lodge, near the village of Leenane.
From gentle lakeside strolls to a hard mountain ascent, it covers a wide range of fitness levels. If you book one thing, make it the sea kayak on the Killary fjord; the standout walk is the Mweelrea Summit Loop, for which the resort runs a free drop-off.
Landscape & Walking
The Mweelrea Mountains
To the west, the Mweelrea Mountains rise to 814 m, the highest summit in Connacht. The name comes from the Irish Cnoc Maol Réidh, roughly “the smooth bald hill”, a fair description of its bare, windswept ridges. From the summit, views stretch across the Killary Fjord to the islands of Inishbofin and Inishturk, and out to Clare Island and Achill Island on the horizon. To the north, the silhouette of Croagh Patrick is visible on clear days.
Trails and Archaeology
The valley’s terrain holds archaeological and religious significance. Hill-walking routes pass ancient cairns, stone circles, and early Christian sites, linking modern visitors to centuries of history. The surrounding hills – including Bengorm, Creggan, the Sheefry Hills, the Maamturk range, and Maamtrasna – provide a network of medium- and high-level walks. The iconic Twelve Bens are also reachable within a short drive.
Walking Routes
- Lakeside Walks: The three lakes offer gentle strolls along forest tracks and shores. Glencullen is framed by pines, Doolough is surrounded by rolling hills, and Finnlough opens onto views of the Bundorragha River. These routes are suitable for families and casual walkers.
- Mweelrea Summit Loop: A challenging ascent starting from Delphi Lodge. The resort offers a complimentary drop-off service for this route, leaving walkers at the trailhead and collecting them at the end.
- Bengorm Ridge Walk: A medium-level hike with dramatic cliff-side panoramas.
- Sheefry Hills & Creggan: Moderate walks that finish back at the lodge, allowing for a rest after the hike.
Adventure Activities
Delphi Resort’s on-site adventure centre runs up to 20 outdoor activities, catering to individuals, groups and families. The centre operates seasonally, typically from late January to mid-December. One thing to be clear on: this is a resort, not a free-access beauty spot, so day visitors are welcome but generally need to book an activity, the spa or a meal rather than just turning up.
