Overview
Nestled on the historic estate of Old Connaught House in Bray, County Wicklow, Festina Lente Gardens is one of Ireland’s few surviving restored Victorian walled gardens still functioning as they would have in the late 19th century. Spanning two and a half acres, the garden is divided into three distinct zones – a formal ornamental garden, a tranquil pool garden and a productive kitchen garden – all enclosed by original stone walls dating back to the 1780s. The site is run by the Festina Lente charity, a not‑for‑profit organisation that blends horticulture, equestrian activities and social inclusion programmes. Visitors enjoy free entry, a café serving tea, coffee and light bites, and a range of workshops and events throughout the year.
History
The Plunkett family moved into Old Connaught House in 1807 and began shaping the surrounding grounds. Over four generations they expanded the garden, adding the walled layout that still frames the site today. The original stone walls were erected in the 1780s, predating the Plunketts’ arrival. After the family left in 1946 the garden fell into neglect.
In the 1990s the Festina Lente Foundation secured a lease on the estate. Guided by a Historical Survey commissioned by the National Heritage Council, the charity embarked on a meticulous restoration that respected the Victorian design while introducing contemporary therapeutic features. The main house and head‑gardener’s house are now privately owned, but the walled garden remains open to the public. The name Festina Lente – Latin for “hasten slowly” – reflects both the Plunkett family motto and the charity’s philosophy of measured, inclusive development.
What to See & Do
Ornamental Formal Garden
The formal garden showcases classic Victorian planting schemes, with symmetrical borders, topiary, and a series of seasonal flower displays. Highlights include a rose terrace overlooking a central fountain, statuary, and the award‑winning Therapeutic Sensory Integration Trail designed by Oliver Shurmann. The trail weaves through textured surfaces, fragrant plants and auditory elements, offering a calming experience for visitors of all abilities.
Pool Garden & Terrapin Sanctuary
A shallow reflecting pool sits at the heart of the garden, surrounded by lavender borders and protected on all sides by yew trees. The pool is home to a small terrapin sanctuary that delights children and adults alike.
Working Kitchen Garden
The kitchen garden demonstrates historic Victorian horticulture with raised beds, herbaceous borders and a network of community allotments rented annually. A popular feature is the Fairy Wishing Tree, where children can leave wishes for the garden’s resident fairies. Seasonal vegetables, herbs and edible flowers are grown here, and occasional harvest festivals let visitors sample the produce.
Garden Centre & Café
Adjacent to the walled garden is a modest garden centre offering plants, seeds and gardening tools. The on‑site café serves freshly brewed coffee, tea, cakes and sandwiches, and welcomes dogs on leashes, making it a relaxed stop after a stroll.
Workshops, Events & Courses
Festina Lente runs nature‑based workshops for children, horticultural courses for adults, and a calendar of seasonal events – from floral art demonstrations to birthday parties with craft‑focused activities. Most events are free; specialised workshops and accredited QQI horticulture courses carry a modest fee. Guided tours are available on most days for €3 per person and provide deeper insight into the garden’s heritage.
