Overview
Festina Lente Gardens offers a quiet retreat just moments from the bustle of Bray. As one of Ireland’s few surviving restored Victorian walled gardens, it provides a rare glimpse into 19th-century horticulture while serving as a modern community hub. Spanning two and a half acres on the historic Old Connaught Estate, the site is divided into three distinct zones: a formal ornamental garden, a tranquil pool garden, and a productive kitchen garden. All are enclosed by original stone walls that date back to the 1780s.
The garden is managed by the Festina Lente charity, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to horticulture, equestrian activities, and social inclusion. Entry is free, making it an accessible day out for families, gardeners, and anyone seeking a calm break. The grounds feature a therapeutic sensory trail, a terrapin sanctuary, and a café that welcomes dogs, ensuring there is something to engage every visitor.
History
The landscape of Old Connaught has been shaped by the Plunkett family since they moved into the house in 1807. Over four generations, they expanded the grounds, creating the walled layout that defines the garden today. Interestingly, the stone walls themselves predate the family’s arrival, having been erected in the 1780s.
After the Plunkett family left in 1946, the garden fell into decades of neglect. The turning point came in the 1990s when the Festina Lente Foundation secured a lease on the estate. Guided by a historical survey commissioned by the National Heritage Council, the charity undertook a meticulous restoration. The work respected the original Victorian design while integrating contemporary features, such as the sensory trail.
The name Festina Lente is Latin for “hasten slowly.” It was the Plunkett family motto and now reflects the charity’s philosophy of measured, inclusive development. While the main house and the head gardener’s house are now private residences, the walled garden remains a public space open year-round.
Exploring the Gardens
The Formal Ornamental Garden
The formal garden showcases classic Victorian planting schemes with symmetrical borders, topiary, and seasonal flower displays. A rose terrace overlooks a central fountain, surrounded by statuary that adds character to the space.
A standout feature here is the Therapeutic Sensory Integration Trail, designed by Oliver Shurmann. This award-winning trail weaves through the garden, incorporating textured surfaces, fragrant plants, and auditory elements. It is designed to be calming and engaging for visitors of all abilities, encouraging a slower pace of exploration that matches the garden’s motto.
Pool Garden & Terrapin Sanctuary
At the heart of the garden lies a shallow reflecting pool, bordered by lavender and protected by a ring of mature yew trees. This area offers a serene spot for reflection. The pool is also home to a small terrapin sanctuary, which is a particular favourite with children. Watching the terrapins bask on the rocks provides a gentle wildlife encounter right in the middle of the garden.
Working Kitchen Garden
The kitchen garden demonstrates historic Victorian horticulture in action. Raised beds and herbaceous borders are interspersed with community allotments rented annually by local residents. Seasonal vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers are grown here, contributing to the garden’s productive heritage.
A charming feature for younger visitors is the Fairy Wishing Tree, where children can leave wishes for the garden’s resident fairies. During the growing season, the kitchen garden reaches peak production, and occasional harvest festivals allow visitors to sample the fresh produce.
Café & Facilities
Adjacent to the walled garden, a modest garden centre offers plants, seeds, and gardening tools for those inspired by their visit. The on-site café serves freshly brewed coffee, tea, cakes, and sandwiches. It is a popular spot to rest after a walk, and dogs are welcome on leashes, making it a relaxed stop for pet owners.
Festina Lente also runs a programme of nature-based workshops for children, horticultural courses for adults, and seasonal events. While general entry is free, specialised workshops and accredited QQI horticulture courses carry a modest fee. Guided tours are available on most days for €3 per person, offering deeper insight into the garden’s history and planting schemes.
