🏛️ Attraction

Last updated: 28 April 2026

Overview

The Game of Thrones Studio Tour in Banbridge is the world’s only official visitor experience dedicated to HBO’s epic saga. Housed in the historic Linen Mill Studios – a former 1900s linen mill that became a key filming location in 2011 – the attraction spans over 100,000 sq ft of indoor space. Fans can wander through six fully realised sets, from the Great Hall of Winterfell to the throne room of Dragonstone, and get up close to the original costumes, weapons and props that defined the series. The tour is self‑guided, allowing you to linger where you wish, and it runs every day of the year, making it a perfect rain‑free day out in Northern Ireland.

History & Background

Linen Mill Studios began life as a working linen mill in the early 20th century, on a site that had housed a linen operation since 1832. After the decline of the linen industry the mill closed, and in 2008 the owners struck a partnership with the Game of Thrones production team, turning the vacant space into a film‑production hub. The site was used for a number of key scenes from 2011 onward. Following the series’ conclusion, a €48 million investment transformed the working sets into an immersive visitor attraction, opening its doors on 4 February 2022. The attraction was developed under licence with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and aims to showcase the craftsmanship behind Westeros.

Interactive Highlights

  • Hall of Faces – a striking column of human faces from the show; visitors can have a digital mug‑shot taken and added to the display.
  • Wun Wun – a life‑size giant White Walker that towers over the ceiling, offering a dramatic photo opportunity.
  • Scorpion Crossbow – a massive, Leonardo‑da‑Vinci‑inspired weapon on display, complete with a replica arrow.
  • Bow & Arrow Test – interactive stations let guests try their aim with a bow, mirroring the training of the Night’s Watch.
  • Design Your Own Sigil – touchscreen kiosks let visitors create a house sigil, which is then printed on a shield.
  • Prosthetics & Make‑up – behind‑the‑scenes displays show how the series’ terrifying creatures were brought to life.
  • Digital Photo Booths – capture yourself in a virtual Winterfell or Dragonstone backdrop.
  • Seven Kingdoms Afternoon Tea – themed pastries and drinks served in the on‑site café.

Visitor Experience

A typical visit lasts 2–3 hours, though many guests stay longer to explore the interactive stations, enjoy the café, or browse the gift shop. Highlights include walking the Great Hall of Winterfell, stepping into the Mess Hall of Castle Black, and standing before the original Iron Throne. Audio guides are available in several languages, and the experience is fully self‑paced, allowing families and solo travellers alike to linger at favourite spots.

Production Trivia

  • 33 % of the series was filmed at Linen Mill Studios, making it one of the most used locations in Northern Ireland.
  • The crew used 52,000 bags of fake snow and 163 tons of propane to create the series’ winter and fire effects.
  • A 30‑foot dragon skull of Balerion the Black Dread took six weeks to craft before being shipped to Spain for filming and now sits on display.
  • The giant White Walker costume for Wun Wun required 3–5 hours each day for actor Ian Whyte to don.
  • Over tens of thousands of weapons – swords, spears, shields – were displayed, many of which are now exhibited in the tour.
  • The original Iron Throne from the season‑eight finale is housed in a dedicated room with a digital dragon backdrop.

Economic Impact & Visitor Numbers

The attraction is projected to draw 600,000 visitors a year, creating around 200 jobs and generating an estimated £400 million in tourism revenue for the region. Recent figures show visitor numbers rose 28 % year‑on‑year in 2025, with a further 33 % increase in the second half of that year. The rapid growth underlines the tour’s role as a major driver of post‑COVID tourism in County Down.
