Overview

Nestled on Great Victoria Street in Belfast’s bustling city centre, the Grand Opera House is the only surviving Victorian theatre in Northern Ireland. Since its grand opening on 23 December 1895, the house has been a cultural beacon, presenting everything from classic operas and West End hits to contemporary comedy and family‑friendly pantomimes. The venue is split into two performance spaces: the majestic main auditorium, a showcase of Frank Matcham’s oriental‑style architecture, and the intimate Baby Grand Studio, a 100‑seat space for emerging talent and experimental work. Three bars – on each floor – serve a range of drinks, from craft beers to fine wines, making a night at the opera a full‑service experience.

History

The Grand Opera House was commissioned by circus impresario Joseph Warden, who saw the potential of the former Ginnett’s Circus site. He hired the prolific English theatre architect Frank Matcham, whose reputation for opulent, technically advanced theatres was unrivalled. The building opened in 1895 with the pantomime Bluebeard and quickly earned a reputation for its lavish décor and excellent acoustics. In 1904 it briefly became the “Palace of Varieties” before reverting to its original name.

During the Second World War the house operated as a repertory theatre, even hosting a gala attended by Eisenhower, Montgomery and Alan Brooke to mark the war’s end. The Troubles saw the venue close for a period, and it was later threatened with demolition. A successful campaign led the Arts Council to purchase the building, and it was listed in 1974. A major refurbishment in 2006 added the Baby Grand Studio, extended the foyers, and upgraded disabled access, ensuring the theatre could meet 21st‑century audience expectations while preserving its historic charm. A further restoration completed in 2020 refreshed the auditorium’s decorative plasterwork and modernised backstage facilities.

The original prospectus claimed the theatre could accommodate up to 3,500 patrons, making it one of the most extensive venues of its era in the United Kingdom.

What to See & Do

Main Auditorium & Heritage Exhibition

The main auditorium remains one of the finest surviving examples of Matcham’s oriental‑style design. Visitors on a guided tour can admire the restored plasterwork, the original chandelier, and the intricate proscenium arch. Adjacent to the foyer is the Heritage Exhibition, opened in 2021 with National Lottery funding. The exhibition displays original architectural drawings, photographs of legendary performers such as Charlie Chaplin, Judi Dench and Luciano Pavarotti, and a collection of memorabilia that tells the story of the house from circus roots to modern day.

Baby Grand Studio

The Baby Grand Studio offers a more intimate setting for contemporary drama, dance, and local productions. Its flexible seating arrangement makes it ideal for workshops, community events and experimental performances that would be out of place in the larger auditorium.

Accessible Performances

The Grand Opera House is committed to inclusive programming. Regularly scheduled accessible performances include signed, captioned, audio‑described and relaxed‑format shows, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the arts on an equal footing.

Bars & Dining

Each floor houses a bar serving a curated selection of drinks. The ground‑floor bistro (formerly the Hippodrome Restaurant) and the third‑floor bar provide a relaxed environment for pre‑show drinks or post‑show discussions. For a quick bite, the venue also offers deli platters for two, perfect for a light snack before the curtain rises.

Guided Theatre Tours

Limited‑capacity guided tours, bookable through the Box Office, take visitors backstage, through the costume department and onto the stage door on Glengall Street. The 45‑minute tour is preceded by 30 minutes of free time to explore the Heritage Exhibition at your own pace.
