Overview

The Grand Opera House stands as Belfast’s only surviving Victorian theatre. Located on Great Victoria Street in the city centre, the venue has been a cultural hub since its doors opened on 23 December 1895. Today, it operates two performance spaces: the grand main auditorium, designed by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham in an oriental style, and the 100-seat Baby Grand Studio, which focuses on contemporary drama and experimental work. Visitors without tickets can still explore the building through guided tours, browse the Heritage Exhibition, or enjoy the three on-site bars that serve craft beers, wines and deli platters.

History

Circus impresario Joseph Warden commissioned the theatre on the site of the former Ginnett’s Circus. He brought in Frank Matcham, whose technical innovations and lavish interiors were celebrated across Britain. The building opened with the pantomime Bluebeard and quickly gained a reputation for excellent acoustics and ornate décor. In 1904, it briefly operated under the name “Palace of Varieties” before returning to its original title.

The venue’s history is closely tied to Belfast’s broader narrative. During the Second World War, it functioned as a repertory theatre and hosted a notable gala attended by Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery to mark the end of the conflict. The theatre later weathered closures during the Troubles and faced a serious threat of demolition in the 1970s. A public campaign saved the building, leading to its purchase by the Arts Council and official listing in 1974. Major refurbishments in 2006 and 2020 restored the auditorium’s decorative plasterwork, upgraded backstage facilities, and created the Baby Grand Studio, ensuring the theatre meets modern accessibility and technical standards while preserving its historic character.

What to See & Do

Heritage Exhibition

Opened in 2021 with National Lottery funding, the Heritage Exhibition sits adjacent to the main foyer. The display traces the theatre’s evolution from its circus origins to its current status as a leading cultural venue. Visitors can view original architectural blueprints, archival photographs, and memorabilia linked to performers who have appeared on the stage, including Charlie Chaplin, Judi Dench and Luciano Pavarotti. The exhibition is included with guided tour bookings and can be explored at your own pace before the tour begins.

Guided Theatre Tours

The 45-minute guided tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at the building’s mechanics and history. Guides lead visitors through the costume department, across the stage, and out to the stage door on Glengall Street. Tours are limited in capacity and must be booked in advance through the Box Office. Each session is preceded by 30 minutes of free time in the Heritage Exhibition.

Baby Grand Studio

The Baby Grand Studio provides a flexible space for smaller-scale productions, workshops and community events. Its intimate layout encourages closer interaction between performers and audiences, making it a regular venue for emerging Northern Irish playwrights, dance troupes and experimental theatre companies. Schedules vary throughout the year, so checking the online calendar before visiting is recommended.

Accessible Performances

The theatre runs a dedicated accessibility programme to ensure arts are available to all audiences. Regular productions are adapted into signed, captioned, audio-described and relaxed formats. Staff at the assistance desk can provide detailed information on specific show arrangements and seating options.
