Overview
Halton’s Amenity & Forest Park lies just outside the market town of Cootehill, straddling the historic Cavan‑Monaghan border in Ireland’s Ancient East. The park is best known for Erica’s Fairy Forest, a whimsical woodland trail that invites visitors of all ages to wander among native oaks, ash and birch trees dotted with hand‑crafted fairy figures. Open 24 hours a day, free of charge, the park provides a tranquil yet enchanting stop on any day‑trip through the rolling drumlin landscape of the Irish midlands.
History / Background
The Fairy Forest was created as a living tribute to Erica Ní Draighneain (2010‑2016), a local girl whose love of nature inspired the community to turn a corner of the amenity park into a storybook setting. Local volunteers, the Cootehill Development Group and friends of Erica installed the fairy sculptures and marked the trail with poetic panels that explain the connection between the fairies and Erica’s memory. While the forest itself opened a few years after Erica’s passing (around 2017), the wider amenity area has long served Cootehill as a communal green space for markets, fairs and outdoor recreation.
What to See & Do
- Erica’s Fairy Forest Trail – Low‑lying, wheelchair‑ and stroller‑friendly paths wind through a mix of native trees, each bearing a tiny fairy perched on a twig or nestled in bark. Interpretive panels share verses that celebrate the forest’s dedication.
- Nature Walks – Beyond the fairy‑themed loop, marked circuits lead out onto the drumlin hills, alongside the Dromore River, offering bird‑watching, occasional deer sightings and views of the surrounding countryside.
- Dromore River Canoe Tours – Guided three‑hour canoe trips start at the forest’s edge and finish at the riverside part of the park, providing a scenic water‑based perspective of the landscape.
- Walkabout Coffee – On weekend mornings a pop‑up kiosk beside the forest entrance serves freshly brewed coffee and light snacks, perfect for a mid‑walk break.
