Overview
Killeen Castle Golf Club is one of only two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses in Ireland. Set within a 600‑acre historic estate in Dunsany, County Meath, the course delivers a world‑class parkland experience just 30 minutes from Dublin Airport. From the moment you step onto the first tee, the blend of ancient woodlands, mature trees, tranquil ponds and elevated greens creates a dramatic backdrop for a demanding yet enjoyable round of golf.
The championship layout measures over 7,700 yards from the back tees, plays to a par of 72, and offers multiple tee options that make the course accessible to players of all abilities. Its reputation is cemented by high‑profile events such as the 2011 Solheim Cup, the Ladies Irish Open (2010‑2012) and the Irish Challenge on the European Challenge Tour (2025‑2027). The course has also been honoured as the Best Parkland Course of the Year at the 2025 IGTOA awards.
History & Background
The estate’s story stretches back to 1181 when Hugh de Lacy erected the original stone castle that still dominates the horizon. For five centuries the Plunkett family, Earls of Fingall, called Killeen Castle their seat, expanding the medieval tower house and shaping the surrounding village and markets. By the late 18th century the castle had fallen into disrepair, but a 19th‑century remodel by architects Francis Johnson and James Sheil gave the present façade its elegant character.
After a period as a stud farm in the mid‑20th century, the estate was redeveloped in the late 1990s. In 2008 the new Jack Nicklaus Signature Course opened, and Nicklaus himself called it “one of my proudest designs”. The construction involved more than 500 miles of drainage channels and 40,000 tonnes of sand, ensuring the fairways stay playable 365 days a year.

These schools are popular with amateurs and touring pros alike.

After a round, diners can unwind at Sixteen, a restaurant showcasing the finest local produce from the Boyne Valley, or enjoy a relaxed meal at The Kiln lounge bar.
Ancillary Activities
Beyond golf, the estate offers 5 km of ancient woodland walks, stocked lakes for fishing, and abundant wildlife spotting opportunities. Caddies are available on request, and both walking and golf‑cart policies are flexible, allowing you to choose your preferred pace.
