Overview
Milltown Golf Club sits on a gently rolling parkland setting just six kilometres south of Dublin’s bustling city centre. The 18‑hole, par‑71 layout stretches 5,671 metres (approximately 5.6 km) and is renowned for its immaculate fairways, mature tree‑lined corridors and panoramic vistas of the Dublin Mountains and the River Dodder. Accessible via a short six‑minute walk from the Windy Abbey/Milltown Luas stop on the Red Line, the club is a convenient yet tranquil escape for both local enthusiasts and visiting golfers.
The club’s refurbished clubhouse is a focal point of hospitality. A wrap‑around balcony overlooks the putting green and several key holes (1, 2, 3, 9 and 18), providing a perfect backdrop for a post‑round drink. Inside, guests can choose between a fine‑dining restaurant with a curated wine list and a more informal bar serving classic Irish fare. Throughout the year the clubhouse hosts a lively programme of social events, making it a hub of community activity as well as a sporting venue.
History
Milltown’s story began on 28 September 1907 when Captain F.E. Davies drove the inaugural ball, officially opening the course. The original layout was drawn up by F.E. Davies and W.C. Pickeman; the present configuration reflects later work by Mackenzie and Ebert, preserving the classic parkland feel while modernising the routing.
The club was an early pioneer of mixed competition, staging one of the first Open Mixed Foursomes Match‑Play events, which attracted large galleries and set a social tone that persists today. Between 1939 and 1967 the legendary Irish amateur Joe Carr dominated the Milltown tournament, winning it nine times. More recent representatives include Jody Fanagan and Deirdre Walsh, who have both played for Ireland in senior international teams.
Milltown celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2017 and continues to honour its heritage while embracing modern sustainability standards – it is GEO‑certified for environmental stewardship.
Course Highlights
- Parkland character – the course is set on gently undulating, tree‑lined fairways that feel both secluded and open, with extensive views of the Dublin Mountains.
- Strategic length – long par‑fours and a demanding par‑5 (hole 5, 460 m) test distance control, while several short holes demand precise iron play and accurate putting.
- Drivable par‑four – the first hole is a tempting par‑four that can be reached in two shots for the bold, but a miss can be costly.
- Tight, fast greens – the greens are heavily contoured and fast, rewarding careful approach shots and thoughtful putting.
- Walkable layout – despite its length, the course is designed to be walked comfortably, though many players opt for buggy hire.
