Overview

The Mourne Seafood Cookery School operates from the Nautilus Centre, a modern harbour-side building in Kilkeel that serves as a gateway to the coastal waters of County Down. Rather than a traditional classroom, the space is designed as a working kitchen and culinary workshop where visitors step directly into the local fishing industry. Large windows look out over the active harbour, providing a constant view of trawlers returning with the day’s catch. The school’s focus is practical: learning how to handle, prepare, and cook sustainable seafood using techniques that highlight the natural quality of the ingredients.

Classes & Workshops

Chef Roger Moynihan, who founded the school, structures the sessions around skill-building and ingredient knowledge. Classes are timed to suit different schedules and experience levels, with all bookings requiring advance reservation.

  • Two-Course Session (2.5 hours) – Priced at £50 per person, this option covers a starter and main course. It includes a glass of wine or soft drink, making it suitable for a relaxed afternoon or a focused culinary introduction.
  • Three-Course Session (3.5 hours) – At £65 per person, this extends the experience with a dessert course. Participants work through a complete menu, learning plating techniques and flavour pairing.
  • Extended Masterclass (5.5 hours) – For £120 per person, this immersive session covers up to five courses. It functions as a full lunch experience, giving participants ample time to experiment with different cooking methods and ask detailed questions about seafood preparation.

Every class provides a printed recipe sheet and a certificate of completion. Ingredients are sourced directly from local fishers and producers, with a strict emphasis on sustainability. When the catch is particularly abundant, surplus seafood is available for purchase in the on-site shop.

Demonstrations & Private Hire

Not everyone needs to get hands-on to enjoy the experience. Group demonstrations run throughout the day and are priced between £7 and £15 per person, depending on the size of the party (groups of 10 to 46 are accommodated). These sessions focus on technique and tasting, allowing visitors to watch professional preparation while sampling finished dishes and discussing best practices for cooking seafood at home.

The fully equipped kitchen is also available for private hire at £100 per day. This setup is commonly used for corporate team-building exercises, birthday celebrations, or bespoke culinary events where guests want a controlled, professional environment. All bookings include complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits, Wi-Fi, and free on-site parking.

The Nautilus Centre & Maritime Heritage

The cookery school shares its building with the Mourne Maritime Visitor Centre, which offers interactive exhibits on Kilkeel’s long-standing fishing heritage. Displays trace the evolution of local boatbuilding, net-making, and the seasonal rhythms of the North Channel fisheries. A Kilkeel Tourist Information Office is also located within the centre, providing maps, local advice, and booking assistance for visitors exploring the wider area. The combination of culinary instruction and maritime history makes the site a practical starting point for understanding how the sea shapes daily life in this corner of Northern Ireland.

Planning Your Visit

Location & Access The Nautilus Centre is situated on Rooney Road, Kilkeel, County Down BT34 4AG. It is easily accessed from the A2 coastal road, with free parking available directly outside. The building is wheelchair accessible and includes baby-changing facilities. A short walk from the centre leads to Kilkeel Harbour, where you can watch the fishing fleet at work or grab a coffee at a nearby waterfront café.

Booking & Payment Classes and demonstrations must be booked in advance via the school’s website or by phone. Payments are accepted in pounds sterling, with all major credit and debit cards processed on-site. The school operates Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 17:00, with a daily lunch break from 13:00 to 13:30. Saturdays operate on a seasonal schedule and are closed between November and Easter. The venue is closed on Sundays.

Exploring the Surrounding Area Kilkeel’s position on the eastern coast makes it a convenient base for coastal walks and heritage visits. The GI Trail follows the shoreline north towards Annalong, passing through quiet coves and historic fishing villages. Further inland, the Mourne Mountains rise sharply from the coast, offering well-marked hiking routes and panoramic views over the North Channel. Booking a morning class leaves the afternoon free to follow the harbour path or head inland for a coastal hike.
