Overview
Located on Athgarvan Road in Newbridge, County Kildare, the Newbridge Silverware Visitor Centre bridges traditional Irish manufacturing with global fashion history. Just a short drive from Dublin via the M7, the complex operates as a fully integrated lifestyle destination. It houses a flagship retail store, the award-winning Silver Restaurant, Café Carleton, and two main attractions: a working cutlery and jewellery factory, and the Museum of Style Icons. The centre provides a hands-on look at how silver is transformed into everyday luxury items, alongside a rotating showcase of iconic 20th-century couture.
The Museum of Style Icons
The upper floor of the visitor centre is dedicated to the Museum of Style Icons, which offers free entry and operates as a self-guided exhibition. The collection was originally amassed by former chief executive William Doyle, whose personal passion for fashion and film history led to the acquisition of extraordinary garments and memorabilia.
The museum rotates its displays, but several permanent highlights draw visitors from around the world. Fashion enthusiasts can view Audrey Hepburn’s hot-pink cocktail dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, alongside her signature black Givenchy dress from Charade. Music history is represented by the Beatles’ stage suits worn during the A Hard Day’s Night tour. Royal fashion takes centre stage with Princess Diana’s purple-red ball gown and matching bolero, as well as two rare outfits once owned by Princess Grace – currently the only pieces from her collection displayed outside of Monaco.
The exhibition also covers American icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, alongside a dedicated section for Irish cinematic history. Visitors can explore costumes from beloved films such as The Banshees of Inisherin and Normal People. For those wanting a deeper experience, the museum occasionally hosts “Get up Close & Personal” sessions, where small groups are invited to handle selected garments while wearing protective white gloves.
Behind the Scenes: The Working Factory
What sets this visitor centre apart from typical museums is that it sits directly above a fully operational manufacturing plant. Founded in 1934 as a cooperative to provide local employment, Newbridge Silverware began by exporting silver cutlery. Over the decades, the business expanded into jewellery production, refining traditional silversmithing techniques that remain central to their process today.
A 45-minute guided factory tour takes visitors through the production floor. You will see artisans at work, transforming raw silver into polished cutlery sets and intricate jewellery pieces. The tour provides a practical understanding of the hand-finishing, polishing, and quality control steps that have defined the brand since the 1930s. Factory tours are priced at €16 for adults and €14 for seniors, with children under 12 accompanying an adult entering for free.
Dining and Shopping
After exploring the museum and factory, the centre offers several ways to extend your visit. The flagship lifestyle store stocks Irish-designed jewellery, premium tableware, and unique gifts. Visitors from outside the EU can take advantage of tax-free shopping, making the store a practical stop for high-quality souvenirs.
For dining, the award-winning Silver Restaurant serves contemporary Irish cuisine prepared with locally sourced produce. It operates as a full-service restaurant, ideal for a proper meal. For a more casual option, Café Carleton offers lighter bites, pastries, and coffee in a relaxed atmosphere. Both venues provide a comfortable space to discuss the exhibits or plan the rest of your day in the Ancient East.
