The Palmer North Course is the flagship 18‑hole layout at The K Club, a 5‑star golf‑and‑spa resort in Straffan, County Kildare. Spanning 7,350 yards (7,337 yd from the blue tees) on gently undulating parkland, the course weaves through mature Irish oak, ash and beech, with the River Liffey threading its way around several key holes. Designed by Arnold Palmer in partnership with Ed Seay and opened in 1991, the layout quickly earned a reputation for both beauty and brutal challenge – a reputation cemented when it hosted the 36th Ryder Cup in 2006 and the Irish Open in 2023, 2025 and 2027.

History

When the Smurfit family commissioned the K Club in the early 1990s, they wanted a world‑class inland venue that could rival the great coastal courses of Ireland. Arnold Palmer’s design philosophy – “playability for the masses, but a stern test for the best” – was realised in the Palmer North’s blend of open fairways, strategic water, and towering native trees. The course’s most historic moment arrived in September 2006 when it staged the first Ryder Cup ever held in Ireland. The event drew a record‑equalling crowd and produced an emotional victory for Europe, with the River Liffey playing a starring role on holes such as the signature 8th par‑4 and the dramatic 10th.

Since then the venue has repeatedly attracted elite fields for the Irish Open (2023, 2025, 2027) and eleven European Opens, reinforcing its status as one of Europe’s premier championship courses.

What to See & Do

Signature Holes

  • 4 – Arnold’s Pick – A short, risk‑reward par‑3 that demands an accurate tee‑shot over a shallow water feature.
  • 7 – Michael’s Favourite – A 430‑yard par‑4 that forces a precise approach to a green guarded on three sides by the Liffey.
  • 16 – Inis Mor – A monster 600‑yard, double‑dogleg par‑5 that threads between trees, bunkers and the river before reaching a two‑sided green.
  • 17 – Half Moon – A moon‑shaped, island‑green par‑4 that requires a delicate carry over water.
  • 18 – The Finisher – A dog‑leg par‑5 that finishes on a raised green flanked by the river, offering a dramatic climax.
