Overview
Situated just a short stroll from Ballymena town centre, People’s Park is a 45-acre urban green space that consistently earns high praise for its maintenance, safety, and community focus. Recognised with a Green Flag award, the park strikes a practical balance between Victorian-era landscaping and contemporary leisure facilities. It offers a reliable, well-equipped escape from the daily routine, with clear pathways, seasonal lighting, and facilities that cater to everything from structured sports to quiet birdwatching.
A Victorian Legacy with Modern Twists
The park’s origins trace back to 1870, when the land was formally gifted to the town and opened to the public. Early landscape architects worked to transform the site – once a former quarry and the location of a demolished Martello tower – into a structured public garden. Over the decades, features like the artificial lake, a decorative fountain, and a traditional bandstand were added, cementing its status as a civic gathering place.
Today, the park’s historic character is complemented by thoughtful modern additions. The standout piece is Five Apples, a striking stainless-steel sculpture by Japanese artist Shiro Masuyama. Installed in 1999, the artwork’s reflective surfaces and organic shapes were designed to symbolise community, trust, and a shared aspiration for peace. It has since become one of the park’s most photographed landmarks, offering a quiet focal point amid the surrounding greenery.
Wildlife, Walking & Play
The heart of the park is the People’s Park Dam, a large lake that supports a surprisingly diverse range of waterfowl. Throughout the year, you can spot teal, greylag geese, mute swans, and tree creepers. For visitors who want to engage with the wildlife, designated “Ducks Choice” feeding stations provide appropriate, healthy food for the birds – keeping the ecosystem balanced while allowing for a closer encounter.
A well-maintained path circles the lake, offering flat, accessible walking and plenty of seating for a rest. The surrounding lawns are planted with perennial flowers that bring vibrant colour to the spring and summer months, particularly around the bowling green and pavilion.
Families will appreciate the dedicated play areas, which are split into senior and junior zones. The equipment includes slides, swings, climbing frames, and a large tube slide, while the vast open grassy spaces provide room for unstructured play, kite flying, or a simple game of catch. The layout keeps younger children safely separated from older kids while remaining within sight of supervising adults.
Sporting & Leisure Facilities
People’s Park is designed to keep visitors active regardless of the season or age group:
- Tennis & Bowling – Four floodlit astroturf tennis courts cater to casual matches and serious players alike, while the traditional outdoor bowling green offers a more leisurely pace.
- Outdoor Gym – A circuit of weatherproof exercise stations lines parts of the park perimeter, perfect for a quick strength or cardio session.
- Community Garden – Managed by the local charity Base, the allotment area provides a therapeutic horticultural space for adults with learning difficulties. It’s a quiet, purposeful corner of the park that highlights the site’s commitment to inclusive community engagement.
- Park Pavilion – A secure, covered space provides shelter from sudden rain showers. Vending machines nearby stock hot drinks and snacks, making it easy to extend your stay without leaving the grounds.
