Overview
People’s Park in Ballymena, County Antrim, is a 45‑acre urban green space that has earned a Green Flag award for its high standards of maintenance, safety and community involvement. Open year‑round, the park offers a blend of Victorian heritage – bandstand, fountain and former Martello‑tower site – with modern facilities such as flood‑lit astroturf tennis courts, an outdoor gym and a community garden.
History
The land that now forms People’s Park was donated to the town in 1870 by local benefactors and formally opened that year. Landscape work began in 1908, shaping the former quarry and the site of a demolished Martello tower into a public park. Features added during the early 20th century include an artificial lake, a decorative fountain (c.1909) and a park‑keeper’s lodge. The original Victorian bandstand survives, and in 1999 Japanese sculptor Shiro Masuyama contributed the striking Five Apples artwork, symbolising community, trust and peace.
