Overview

Located in the quiet village of Scotstown in Ireland’s Ancient East, Rally School Ireland has spent over two decades turning the Monaghan countryside into a controlled motorsport playground. The facility centres around a 1.1 km purpose-built tarmac circuit that winds through open fields, designed specifically to teach car control, rally techniques, and drifting in a safe environment. Unlike public roads, this is a closed course where you can push a vehicle to its limits without worrying about traffic or speed cameras.

What sets the school apart is its accessibility to everyday visitors. You do not need a driving licence to participate. Whether you are a complete novice, a teenager celebrating a birthday, or a seasoned driver looking to refine your skills, professional instructors sit beside you in the passenger seat for every lap. They provide real-time guidance, ensuring safety while you experience the raw power of rally machinery.

The Track & The Team

The school was founded by Veronica, David, and Malachy Smyth, driven by a shared passion for motorsport and a desire to create a world-class training facility in Ireland. It officially opened with the blessing of legendary Irish rally drivers Bertie Fisher, Andrew Nesbitt, and Niall Maguire. The venue underwent a major relaunch in 2004 alongside Subaru World Rally Champion Mikko Hirvonen, a partnership that cemented its reputation for professional-grade instruction.

Over the years, the circuit has been continuously upgraded with improved runoff areas, better sightlines, and enhanced spectator facilities. The track operates year-round in all weather conditions, meaning rain, wind, or sunshine rarely disrupts the schedule. If conditions are severe, the team contacts booked parties in advance, but Irish weather is generally part of the rally experience.

Vehicle Fleet

The school maintains one of the most diverse fleets in the country, carefully selected to teach different driving dynamics:

  • Mark II Ford Escort – A 150 bhp rear-wheel-drive icon. Its raw, unassisted steering makes it the perfect starting point for learning weight transfer and controlled slides.
  • BMW 325i – A 180 bhp rear-wheel-drive sedan offering smooth, predictable handling for intermediate drivers.
  • Toyota GT86 – Lightweight and agile, this 200 bhp front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car is ideal for mastering precision car control.
  • Mini Cooper S Works – A 210 bhp front-wheel-drive hatchback that delivers nimble, high-revving fun.
  • Subaru Impreza Turbo – A 325 bhp all-wheel-drive rally legend. The turbocharged power and symmetrical AWD system provide instant grip and explosive acceleration.
  • Toyota GR Yaris – The modern 210 bhp rally weapon. Its advanced AWD system and razor-sharp chassis represent the cutting edge of production rally cars.
  • Porsche 911 Carrera – A 380 bhp rear-wheel-drive supercar reserved for advanced packages and team challenges.
  • Nissan 350Z – A purpose-built drift car featuring a powerful V6 and reinforced suspension for sideways driving.

Every vehicle is maintained to competition standards. Helmets and balaclavas are provided, and instructors conduct a thorough safety briefing before you enter the cockpit.

Corporate & Group Events

The facility regularly hosts corporate team-building days, stag and hen parties, and milestone celebrations. Sessions can accommodate between 1 and 30 drivers, with flexible scheduling to suit larger groups. The on-site conference room features Wi-Fi and projection equipment, making it easy to combine a morning meeting with an afternoon on track.

Catering is available through the on-site café, which serves hot drinks, snacks, and light meals. For larger corporate bookings, customised menus and relay race formats can be arranged. Professional photography and video packages are also offered, capturing high-speed action for company newsletters or personal keepsakes.

Accessibility & Visitor Information

Rally School Ireland follows a comprehensive Access Welcome Guide to ensure the experience is inclusive. The main reception, waiting area, and café are located on the ground floor with step-free access. An accessible toilet is available in the main building, and ramps provide entry to the office and tea room.

While the public areas and trackside viewing zones are step-free, the elevated viewing tower does not have wheelchair access. Staff are trained to assist visitors with mobility needs and can arrange familiarisation visits before booking. A defibrillator is located in the staff kitchen beside reception, and trained first-aid personnel are on duty during all sessions. Assistance dogs are welcome.

The track environment is loud and sensory-rich, with constant engine noise and changing weather conditions. Visitors sensitive to noise may wish to bring ear defenders or noise-cancelling headphones. Quiet areas are available on request.
