Overview
Rossmore Golf Club sits three miles southeast of Monaghan town, on Cootehill Road in the townland of Cormeen. Set amid rolling countryside, the 18‑hole parkland course was designed by Irish professional Des Smyth and measures 5,675 metres (approximately 5,590 yards) to a par 70. Fairways wind through ancient woodlands, cross sparkling ponds and skirt gentle streams, delivering panoramic views of Slieve an Larrann, Slieve Cuilceagh and the Sperrin Mountains.
The club is open year‑round and is reputed to be one of the driest courses in Ireland, so a tee time is usually available regardless of the season.
History
Founded in 1916 by Lord Rossmore, the original layout was a modest nine‑hole course within the Rossmore estate, with the gate lodge serving as the first pavilion. In 1992 the course was expanded to its present 18‑hole configuration, incorporating several new lakes and streams to enhance both challenge and scenery.
Over the years Rossmore has welcomed a number of notable golfers: British Open champion Fred Daly was a regular visitor, Darren Clarke suffered a defeat there during his amateur days, and Norman Drew served as club professional for many years. The 7th Baron Rossmore remains the club’s patron.
