SSE Arena, Belfast sits on the waterfront of the iconic Titanic Quarter and is Northern Ireland’s flagship indoor entertainment destination. With a flexible capacity of up to 11,200 (10,800 for most concerts) it welcomes around 800,000 visitors a year. The arena’s modern architecture, state‑of‑the‑art technical rig, and 24 private suites make it a magnet for global touring acts, major sporting fixtures and high‑profile conferences.

History & Background

Opened in the early 2000s, the arena was built to revitalise Belfast’s waterfront and provide a world‑class venue capable of attracting European and world tours. Over two decades it has hosted legends such as Elton John, U2, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish and the MTV Europe Music Awards. In addition to music, the arena became the home of the Stena Line Belfast Giants, Northern Ireland’s only professional ice‑hockey club, drawing a passionate fan base known as the “Teal Army”.

What to See & Do

  • Live Music & Shows – From arena‑scale pop spectacles to intimate theatre‑style productions, the venue’s recent “new theatre format” has hosted Riverdance, Mrs. Brown’s Boys and The Beach Boys in a closer‑to‑the‑stage setting.
  • Belfast Giants Ice Hockey – Catch a home game for a high‑energy experience that blends sport with live entertainment; the arena’s ice surface is one of the few in the UK capable of rapid conversion between concerts and sport.
  • Corporate & Private Events – The venue offers 24 premium suites, exclusive lounges and a range of catering options. Whether you’re planning a product launch, gala dinner or a conference for up to 8,500 delegates, the flexible floor plan (up to 3,700 m²) can be re‑configured for theatre, banquet or exhibition layouts.
  • Nearby Attractions – The arena is a short walk from Titanic Belfast, the SS Nomadic, the Maritime Mile, and the interactive W5 Science & Discovery Centre. It is also within easy reach of the vibrant Belfast City Centre and historic Belfast Harbour, making it simple to combine a show with a cultural day out.

Practical Information

Getting there – The arena is located at 2a Queen’s Quay, directly beside the River Lagan. It is well‑served by public transport: the Belfast‑Lanyon Place railway station is a 10‑minute walk, and numerous Ulsterbus routes stop nearby. The Glider rapid‑transit service also stops at the Titanic Quarter.

Mobile tickets must be downloaded directly to a smartphone; screenshots will not work (source: arena news). Prices vary by event and seating tier; there is no fixed admission fee.

Recent Highlights & Events

  • 3ICE World Cup (4–5 July 2026) – The inaugural international three‑on‑three ice‑hockey tournament will bring eight national teams (Great Britain, USA, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany and Austria) to Belfast, creating a festival atmosphere with fan‑engagement activities.
  • K‑Pop Forever Tribute (February 2026) – A high‑energy K‑Pop tribute show attracted large crowds but drew criticism from some parents over content and costumes. The arena issued a statement acknowledging the feedback and emphasising its commitment to family‑friendly programming.

Future Changes & Naming

From 1 July 2026 the venue will be rebranded as The O2 Belfast following a new 10‑year naming‑rights partnership between the Odyssey Trust and O2. The change brings the arena into O2’s network of venues across the UK, offering O2 customers priority ticket access and upgraded connectivity, including a dedicated fibre network and 5G coverage.

Sustainability Initiatives

In February 2026 the arena launched a pilot of Wizso, a locally‑developed water‑saving toilet solution available in suite‑level bathrooms. The biodegradable pellet reduces unnecessary flushing, cutting water consumption and associated carbon emissions. The trial supports the venue’s broader environmental goals and showcases Northern Irish innovation.
