🏛️ Attraction

Last updated: 4 March 2026

Overview

Tayto Castle sits amid the rolling Ulster countryside of Tandragee, County Armagh, and is home to the world‑famous Tayto crisps. The 500‑year‑old stone structure, once the stronghold of the O’Hanlon clan, now houses a modern, fully operational snack factory. Visitors are invited to step behind the scenes on a 90‑minute guided tour that showcases the journey from locally grown potatoes to the iconic packets that line supermarket shelves across the island.

History

The castle’s origins stretch back over five centuries, originally serving as the seat of the powerful O’Hanlon clan. In 1619, King James I confiscated the property after the clan’s involvement in a rebellion against Hugh O’Neill. The ruins changed hands several times, eventually becoming the residence of the Duke of Manchester in the 1800s. By the mid‑20th century the building fell into disrepair until local entrepreneur Thomas Hutchinson purchased it in 1955. Recognising the region’s abundant potato harvest, Hutchinson launched Tayto crisps in 1956, pioneering the concept of flavored potato snacks in the UK and Ireland. The brand’s mascot, Mr Tayto, has since become a cultural icon, appearing in countless adverts and even travelling abroad to promote the brand.

What to See & Do

During the tour, a knowledgeable guide leads groups through the production line, explaining each stage:

  • Potato reception – Freshly harvested spuds are inspected and washed.
  • Slicing and frying – The potatoes are sliced to a precise thickness before being fried to golden perfection.
  • Flavouring station – Here the famous seasonings – from classic Cheese & Onion to the daring Smoky Bacon – are applied.
  • Packaging – The crisps are weighed, sealed, and boxed for distribution.

Along the way, guests can sample freshly fried crisps straight from the line, offering a taste that’s hotter and crunchier than anything bought in a shop. The highlight for many families is meeting Mr Tayto himself, a costumed mascot who poses for photos and shares a few jokes. Photography is welcome on the castle grounds, but the factory floor is a no‑photo zone for health‑and‑safety reasons.

The castle’s historic interiors also make for a brief stop: visitors glimpse vaulted hallways and a glimpse of a living‑room‑style space that hints at the building’s aristocratic past. The on‑site shop sells a range of Tayto merchandise, from limited‑edition flavours to souvenir tins.
