Overview
Tinakilly House is an elegant Victorian country mansion tucked away in the woodlands between Rathnew and Wicklow town. Set on 14 acres of mature, landscaped grounds that sweep down to the Irish Sea and Broadlough Coastal Lagoon, the property offers a rare blend of historic grandeur and modern comfort. Whether you are seeking a romantic getaway, a family break, or a venue for a special celebration, Tinakilly’s sea‑filled vistas, award‑winning restaurant and meticulously restored period rooms provide a memorable Irish escape.
History
Built in 1883 by the British government for Captain Robert Halpin – the legendary commander of The Great Eastern who laid 2,600 miles of trans‑Atlantic telegraph cable in 1866 – Tinakilly began its life as a strategic coastal residence. Contemporary accounts suggest the British government gave Halpin an open cheque to construct the house, which was named Ti na Coille (Irish for “House of the Wood”), a nod to the oak‑lined avenue that still leads to the front door.
In the early 20th century the Powers family purchased the estate, restored its Victorian splendour and opened the gardens to the public. The current generation of the Powers family continues to run the estate, preserving its historic fabric while adding contemporary luxuries such as a potential spa development announced after the 2013 sale.
Gardens & Walks
The estate spans 14 acres in total, of which roughly 7 acres are formal pleasure gardens. The gardens are divided into several well‑signposted walks:
- Foxes Wood – a shaded trail ideal for quiet contemplation.
- Badger Walk – a gentle loop that winds through native woodland.
- Rose Garden – once tended by a team of 20 gardeners, still bursting with historic varieties.
- Herb Garden – supplies fresh herbs to the kitchen daily.
- Tennis Court and Croquet Lawn – classic country‑house recreation. All routes are mostly flat and wheelchair‑friendly via the estate’s lift.
Dining – Brunel Restaurant
The on‑site Brunel Restaurant (formerly the Green Room) holds two AA rosettes and serves a modern‑traditional menu built around locally sourced fish, game, Wicklow lamb and herbs from the estate’s own garden. The wine list blends classic Bordeaux and Burgundy with a broad selection of New World wines. The restaurant operates year‑round, with a limited seasonal programme in March–April (see Practical Information).
