Bishops Island – monastery on a sea stack
Kilkee, clare
Bishops Island (Oileán an Easpoig Gortaigh, 'island of the hungry bishop') is a 40 m sea stack that split from the Clare mainland within the last thousand years, carrying an early monastery with it. On top sit a Gallarus-type dry-stone church and a beehive hut, unreachable without ropes. You view it from the roadside on Dunlicky Road, two miles south-west of Kilkee.
