Three of these picks sit within a ten-minute walk of each other in the south inner city — Trinity College Library, Christ Church Cathedral and Dublin Castle — with Collins Barracks further west across the river. The Book of Kells is the one to book. The €90 million restoration begun in 2022 has taken the library’s 200,000 oldest volumes off the Long Room shelves, so what children see now is the barrel-vaulted room itself rather than the wall of books. Christ Church tends to work better on that age group anyway: the 12th-century vaults below are the largest medieval crypt in Britain or Ireland.
The rest of the list pulls out along the coast. Malahide Castle runs a 45-minute tour taking in the Great Hall of 1495 and the panelled Oak Room, with the Talbot Botanic Gardens behind it. Skerries Mills, further up the north county, has two windmills and a 13th-century watermill, and the guided tour runs the machinery. Newbridge House at Donabate sits on a 400-acre demesne with a working farm, and wants booking ahead. South of the city, Killiney comes straight off the DART — hill park above, Blue Flag pebble beach below.
Dublin Zoo is the one that takes a full day: 400 animals across 28 hectares of Phoenix Park, booked in advance. If the weather turns, Collins Barracks and the National Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin are both free, and the Palm House and Curvilinear Range will keep you dry a good while longer than Killiney strand.
