Water shapes most of this list. Aughnanure, the six-storey O’Flaherty tower near Oughterard, stands on the shore of Lough Corrib, and Ashford Castle holds the top of the same lake at Cong on the Mayo border, where day visitors pay to walk the 350 acres. Kylemore Abbey sits under Duchruach Mountain with its own lake, walled garden and woodland paths.
The rest runs from ruins you can walk up to freely to buildings still in use. Clifden Castle, John D’Arcy’s roofless Gothic Revival manor above Clifden Bay, lies at the end of a 1 km gravel track off the Sky Road, free and unstaffed. Lynch’s Castle in the middle of Galway city is a working AIB branch with history panels on the ground floor. Menlo Castle’s grounds are closed for conservation, so the ivy-covered shell is best seen from the greenway across the Corrib.
Distances matter here. Connemara alone takes a day, with Ballynahinch at Recess and Kylemore an hour or more from the city, while Portumna, whose Jacobean ground floor and walled gardens sit beside a forest park on Lough Derg, is right across the county in the east. Glinsk, in the Suck valley near the Roscommon border, is a detour rather than a stop. Dunguaire at Kinvara has been shut since 2023, so treat it as a photograph.

Its fame is older than the closure: Oliver St John Gogarty bought it in 1924 and filled it with Yeats, Lady Gregory and Shaw, and its silhouette is one of the most photographed in Ireland.

Clifden Castle is the roofless Gothic Revival manor that John D'Arcy, founder of Clifden, built for himself around 1818. A 1 km gravel track off the Sky Road leads past five standing stones to the ruin, which overlooks Clifden Bay. Free to visit, year-round, with no facilities.
Cregg, galway
North of Galway city near Corrandulla, three layers of Irish history sit close together: the shell of the Kirwans' Cregg Castle, an old corn mill that fed 600 people a day during the Famine, and a heavily quarried wedge tomb some 4,000 years old.
Glinsk, galway
Glinsk is a small farming village near the Galway–Roscommon border, in the valley of the River Suck. Its landmark is Glinsk Castle, a roofless tower house from the early 1600s, often called one of the last castles built in Ireland and known for its tall five-shafted chimney stacks. The ruined Ballinakill Abbey, with a carved Burke effigy, lies nearby.
Kinvara, galway
Kinvara sits at the head of Galway Bay, where Dunguaire Castle stands on a rocky spit at the edge of the water. Once a working turf port, the village of about 720 people is now the southern gateway to the Burren, with a Friday farmers market and an August gathering of Galway hooker boats.
Galway City, galway
Galway's best-preserved medieval townhouse is also a working bank. Built by the merchant Lynch family, the limestone tower carries carved gargoyles and the coats of arms of Henry VII, the Lynches and the Fitzgeralds of Kildare. It became an AIB branch in the 1960s, so you can walk in for free and read the ground-floor history panels.
Menlo, galway
Menlo Castle is the ivy-covered shell of a Blake family mansion that burned on a July night in 1910, killing two maids and the family's daughter Eleanor, whose body was never found. The grounds are closed for conservation, but the ruin still holds the east bank of the River Corrib. The clearest view is from the greenway on the far side, near the NUI Galway sports grounds at Dangan.
Oranmore, galway
Ten minutes east of Galway city, Oranmore is a handy base that keeps its own pubs, cafés and a weekly Thursday market. The 15th-century castle on the bay is a private home now, but Renville Park's woods and shore walks are open to all, with the Burren on the horizon across the water.
Portumna, galway
Portumna Castle is a semi-fortified Jacobean house, built before 1618 for the Earls of Clanricarde and gutted by fire in 1826; only the restored ground floor is open. Beside it lie formal gardens and a walled kitchen garden, and a short walk away a forest park runs down to Lough Derg, home to fallow deer and nesting white-tailed sea eagles.
Portumna, galway
Portumna Castle is a rare Jacobean house at the point where the Shannon widens into Lough Derg, built between 1610 and 1618 and gutted by fire in 1826. The state has been restoring it since the 1960s; today the ground floor and the formal walled gardens – including a living willow maze – are open, with a 600-hectare forest park next door.
