Most of the walking sits along the county’s southern and western edges. The Galtee Mountains run about 30 km on the Limerick border and top out at Galtymore, 917.9 m and the highest inland peak in Ireland, with the Black Road the standard way up. Below the same range, Bansha Wood on the slopes of Slievenamuck has short forest trails to Moor’s Rock and the ruins of Aherlow Castle. West again at Newport, Clare Glens follows the Clare River down a red sandstone gorge on a 4 km loop of footbridges and steps, with a 2 km option.
Three of the seven are long-distance waymarked routes rather than an afternoon out. The East Munster Way covers 69 km in about three days, flat towpath along the Suir from Carrick-on-Suir to Clonmel before it climbs into forestry and open moor. St Declan’s Way runs 116 km from Cashel to Ardmore and is mostly easy going, bar the crossing of the Knockmealdowns. The South Leinster Way finishes at Carrick-on-Suir, though a section towards Piltown is closed in 2026 after a bridge collapse.
Only the Nenagh cycle loops sit in the north of the county, three waymarked routes of 11 km to 67 km along Lough Derg and inland to Cloughjordan. The Galtee tops are exposed and often in cloud; the glen and forest walks take poor weather much better.

Munster, limerick
The Galtee Mountains run about 30 km along the Limerick–Tipperary border and top out at Galtymore, 917.9 m and the highest inland peak in Ireland. The classic day is the Black Road ascent of Galtymore; more experienced walkers link the northern corrie lakes on the Glencushnabinnia circuit, following a long dry-stone estate wall along the ridge.
Newport, tipperary
The Clare River carves a gorge along the Tipperary–Limerick boundary, dropping over a run of waterfalls and plunge pools in the red sandstone. A 4km loop follows both banks, crossing footbridges and flights of steps, with a shorter 2km option for a quick visit. Two car parks, free entry, and you'll usually hear the falls before you see them.

The East Munster Way is really two walks bolted together: flat riverside towpath along the Suir from Carrick-on-Suir to Clonmel, then a climb into Coillte forestry and open moorland on the edge of the Comeragh and Knockmealdown ranges before dropping to Clogheen. Most walkers take three days over its 69 km.
Southeast Ireland, carlow
The South Leinster Way runs 104 km from Kildavin in Carlow to Carrick-on-Suir in Tipperary, over the heathery shoulder of Mount Leinster and along the flat River Barrow towpath. It is graded moderate and usually walked in five days, though more than half of it follows quiet roads. Note: a section between Carrick-on-Suir and Piltown is closed in 2026 after a bridge collapse.
Cashel, tipperary
St Declan’s Way is a 116 km waymarked pilgrim path between Cashel and Ardmore, retracing the route St Declan walked to meet St Patrick. Most of it is easy going; the one hard day is the crossing of the Knockmealdown Mountains.
