Two clusters do most of the work here. In the north, Nenagh Castle’s cylindrical keep stands in the middle of the town on O’Rahilly Street, 101 steps up to a view over the Silvermines and Lough Derg, and it costs nothing. Roscrea packs a 1280s keep, a restored medieval mill, St Crónán’s high cross and a walled garden into one compact complex for €3. Damer House sits in that same courtyard, closed through 2026 for conservation work, though the castle and grounds stay open around it.
The rest follow the Suir. Ormond Castle at Carrick-on-Suir is the only major unfortified Tudor manor in the country, built in the 1560s for a queen who never came, and you see the plaster portrait panels on a 45-minute guided tour. Ardfinnan, between Clonmel and Cahir, sets an 1185 Norman castle beside a 14-arch bridge you can look at from the riverside path.
Garrykennedy on Lough Derg is the exception: its 15th-century tower house was quarried to build the 1780 quay, so the visit is the harbour and the lakeshore trail. Loughmoe near Templemore and Castle Fogarty near Thurles both need a drive and both are exteriors only, Castle Fogarty because the family still lives in what survived the 1922 fire.

St Declan's Way, the old Cashel-to-Ardmore pilgrim road, passes straight through.

Garrykennedy grew up around a natural inlet on Lough Derg's eastern shore. Its 1780 quay was built from the fallen stones of a 15th-century O'Kennedy tower house, and the harbour is now a marina with a waymarked lakeshore trail and traditional music at Larkins.

The Butler family raised this cylindrical keep in the middle of Nenagh around 1216–20, and it's still reckoned the finest of its kind in Ireland. Siege, fire and even a 1760 gunpowder mishap have scarred the stone, but conservation by the OPW means you can climb 101 steps to a 360-degree view over the town, the Silvermines and Lough Derg – for free.

Rising on Devil's Bit Mountain and running 185 km to the sea at Waterford, the Suir is the largest of the Three Sisters. Its Blueway pairs a 53 km paddling trail with a flat, wheelchair-friendly 21 km towpath, threading Cahir Castle, Ormond Castle and Nash's Swiss Cottage along the way.
