Fore, westmeath
Fore sits in a quiet Westmeath valley where a medieval Benedictine priory rises straight from a peat bog – itself the first of the village’s seven folkloric ‘wonders’. The 3 km St Feichín’s Way links the ruins, a holy well and a hermit’s cell whose key you borrow from the village pub.
Mullingar, westmeath
Twin towers and a green dome dominate Mullingar's skyline, but the real reward is inside. Opened in 1936, this Renaissance Revival cathedral – the first in the world dedicated to Christ the King – houses Boris Anrep mosaics, one of which carries a hidden love story, and a small ecclesiastical museum.
Athlone, westmeath
Sean's Bar in Athlone has poured pints on the west bank of the Shannon since, by its own reckoning, around AD 900. The draw is a glass-fronted section of wattle-and-wicker wall dug out during 1970s renovations, live trad most nights, and a floor that slopes gently down towards the river. Its Guinness certificate reads 'oldest pub in Ireland'.
Multyfarnham, westmeath
Abbey Blooms is a seasonal garden and café a kilometre outside Multyfarnham, opened in 2021 by Nua Healthcare Services as a community inclusion project that employs people of all abilities. Entry is free, the café runs daily 10am to 4.30pm, and each December the gardens turn into the ticketed North Pole Experience.
