When the Europa opened on the former Great Northern Railway Station site, it quickly became the epicentre of media coverage during the Troubles. International journalists lodged there, and the hotel hosted press conferences that shaped global perception of the conflict. Over the next two decades the building earned the grim nickname the Hardboard Hotel after repeated bombings – an estimated 33 attacks – left its front windows boarded up. Despite the damage, the Europa never closed its doors, earning the reputation of being the most‑bombed hotel in the world.

The turning point came in 1995 when U.S. President Bill Clinton chose the Europa for a stay that symbolised the peace process. His visit, and subsequent stays by President Hillary Clinton, transformed the hotel’s image from a war‑zone landmark to a beacon of a new, hopeful Belfast. In 1993 the Hastings family purchased the damaged property and invested £8 million to refurbish it into a modern four‑star hotel. Today, the Europa stands as a living reminder of Belfast’s turbulent past and its vibrant future.
