Overview
Mount Juliet Estate occupies 500 acres of rolling parkland on the banks of the River Nore, just a short drive from Kilkenny city. Originally built in 1750 for the first Earl of Carrick, the property was named in honour of his wife, Lady Julianna Butler. Today, it operates as a five-star destination where Georgian heritage meets contemporary luxury. Guests arrive for the championship golf, Michelin-starred dining, and equestrian facilities, but often stay for the tranquil countryside atmosphere and seamless blend of indoor comfort and outdoor activity.
A Heritage of Elegance
The estate’s foundations trace back to the 15th century, though the current Manor House reflects classic Georgian proportions. A recent restoration has carefully preserved original architectural features while introducing refined interiors, handcrafted details, and a palette drawn from the surrounding Irish landscape. The property’s connection to horses runs deep, echoing the traditions of Lady Helen McCalmont, who once rode these grounds, and continues through the modern equestrian centre. The estate also maintains working walled gardens, historic walking paths, and direct access to both the River Nore and its tributary, the King’s River.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is split between two distinct properties. The Manor House offers 32 individually styled bedrooms, many featuring bay windows that frame views of the river or the paddocks of Ballylinch Estate. Rooms are finished with silk curtains, pure-wool carpets, and locally made bath amenities. A short walk away, Hunter’s Yard provides 93 rooms with a more contemporary, country-chic aesthetic. The colour scheme shifts from soft ground-floor tones to deeper hues upstairs, while tweed and cable-knit textiles nod to the estate’s shooting and fishing heritage. Check-in is at 4pm and check-out at 12pm.
Dining & Cocktails
The culinary experience at Mount Juliet is anchored by The Lady Helen Restaurant in the Manor House. Holding a Michelin star and three AA rosettes, executive head chef John Kelly crafts seasonal tasting menus using produce grown on the estate and sourced from nearby farms. For a more relaxed setting, The Hound in Hunter’s Yard holds two AA rosettes and a Michelin Plate, serving approachable lunches and dinners. Guests can also enjoy cocktails in several bars across the grounds, including the 1757 Bar, Majors Bar, and Saddle Bar. Smart casual dress is requested for evening dining.
Golf & Outdoor Pursuits
The 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature course stretches to approximately 7,300 yards and is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest parkland layouts. Water hazards thread through seven holes, while mature specimen trees and manicured fairways create a strategic challenge that has hosted the Irish Open and the WGC American Express Championship. The Paul McGinley Golf Academy provides advanced swing analysis and coaching for visitors looking to refine their game. For those not on the fairways, the estate offers complimentary bicycles, marked walking and running trails, and guided fly fishing on the River Nore. Laser clay shooting and falconry experiences are also available seasonally.
Equestrian & Trails
Horses have always been central to life at Mount Juliet. The purpose-built Equestrian Centre, opened in 2008, features two competition-grade arenas, an American-style barn, and FEI-approved show-jumping paddocks. BHS-qualified instructors lead group and private riding lessons for all ages and abilities, alongside school-holiday pony camps. Guests can also book trail rides that weave through ancient woodlands and along the riverbanks. For a quieter encounter, morning rounds at 08:00 and feeding times at 16:30 allow visitors to observe the estate’s horses up close.
Spa, Cinema & Leisure
When the Irish weather turns brisk, the estate’s indoor facilities provide excellent alternatives. The Health Club in Hunter’s Yard includes a 15-metre heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and fully equipped gym. The spa offers a range of treatment suites for relaxation and wellness. One of the estate’s most unique features is the Manor House’s 12-seat private cinema, which screens three films daily at 3pm, 6pm, and 9pm. Guests settle into velvet armchairs for classic cinema, contemporary releases, and indie favourites, accompanied by fresh popcorn and cocktails.
