Overview

The Royal Dublin Society’s Main Hall – often simply called the RDS Main Hall – sits on the sprawling 43‑acre Ballsbridge campus, just five minutes from Dublin’s city centre. With a theatre‑style capacity of 3,500 and a flexible floor area of 3,503 m², it is the go‑to indoor venue for large‑scale exhibitions, trade shows, conferences and headline concerts. Its iconic façade on Merrion Road is instantly recognisable, and the hall’s modern acoustics make it a favourite among international touring acts and local cultural organisations alike.

History

Founded in 1731 as the Dublin Society, the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) has long been a catalyst for Ireland’s cultural and economic development. After acquiring the Ballsbridge site in 1879, the Society gradually expanded the campus, adding purpose‑built exhibition spaces. The Main Hall, designated Hall 1 in the RDS floor‑plan, was constructed as part of this 20th‑century expansion and quickly became the flagship space for the Society’s public programmes. Over the decades it has hosted the inaugural Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition each January, the RDS Visual Art Awards, and a string of historic concerts – from Queen in the 1980s to Bruce Springsteen’s record‑breaking shows in the 2000s.

What to See & Do

  • Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition – Ireland’s premier STEM showcase, attracting thousands of school students and families every January.
  • Concerts & Live Music – The hall’s 13.7 m ceiling height and state‑of‑the‑art sound system have welcomed legends such as Neil Young, Bon Jovi, Kylie Minogue and U2.
  • Trade Shows & Conferences – With a column‑free span of 70 m, the space accommodates large exhibition stands, runway shows and corporate plenaries.
  • RDS Visual Art Awards – The annual ceremony celebrates Irish visual artists and offers a glimpse of the nation’s creative pulse.

The RDS campus is exceptionally well‑served by public transport. The Lansdowne DART station is a 5‑minute walk from the Main Hall entrance on Merrion Road, providing direct links to Dublin‑Pearse, Connolly and the city centre. Regular Dublin Bus routes 4, 7, 18 and 27x stop outside the main entrance, making the venue accessible from most suburbs. For air travellers, the Air Coach service runs directly between Dublin Airport and the RDS, and detailed directions are available on the RDS “Getting Here” page.

Parking & Access

On‑site car parking is fee‑paying for non‑members, with a standard rate of €10 per day (excluding the Dublin Horse Show and large outdoor concerts). Two car parks – Merrion Road and Simmonscourt/Anglesea Road – operate Monday‑to‑Friday, 07:00‑19:00. Availability varies with event size, so early arrival is advisable for high‑attendance shows.

Facilities

The Main Hall is equipped with high‑speed Wi‑Fi, extensive catering options (including the on‑site Seasons Restaurant and The Brasserie), and a range of ancillary rooms for breakout sessions or private functions. The venue’s accessibility programme ensures step‑free entry, wheelchair‑friendly seating and dedicated assistance services; enquiries can be sent to info@rds.ie.

Booking & Tickets

Because the hall hosts a rotating programme of events, ticketing is managed on a per‑event basis. Visitors should consult the official RDS website or the specific event’s page for pricing and seat selection. Large conferences often require advance registration, while popular concerts may sell out quickly.
