Overview
Rockingham Estate lies just under 3 km east of Boyle, perched on the south‑eastern shore of Lough Key in County Roscommon. Once the grounds of a grand Regency mansion, the site is now a thriving forest park centred on the Rockingham Remembered Tour. The self‑guided experience takes about 45 minutes, is fully wheelchair‑accessible, and leads visitors through two 300‑metre underground tunnels, across Ireland’s first tree‑canopy walk, and up the striking Moylurg Tower for panoramic views of the lake, its 32 islands and the surrounding woodlands. Nearby historic sites include Boyle Abbey, a well‑preserved Cistercian ruin just a short drive away.
History
The estate’s story begins in the early 19th century when Viscount Lorton (Robert King 1st) commissioned the celebrated architect John Nash to design a Regency mansion. Completed around 1810, the house featured a domed façade, a semi‑circular Ionic colonnade and an opulent central hall lit from above. Two barrel‑vaulted service tunnels – one reaching the lake for discreet deliveries and the other linking the stables and servants’ quarters – were integral to the estate’s operation.
After surviving a fire in 1863, the house was devastated by a second blaze in September 1957 and reduced to ruins. The State acquired the site, demolished the remaining structure, and repurposed the foundations for Moylurg Tower. Designed by modernist architect James “Jim” Fehily and erected in the early 1970s, the six‑storey concrete column was initially criticised as a “monstrosity” but has since become an iconic landmark. A lift was added in the mid‑2000s to improve accessibility, and the tower now hosts art installations, music festivals and a growing TikTok following.
What to See & Do
- Historic Tunnels – Walk the cool, dry passages at your own pace. Interpretive signs recount the lives of the servants who once ferried food, furniture and fine china through these hidden arteries.
- Moylurg Tower – Ascend via stairs or lift to the observation platform. From the top, a 360° vista stretches across Lough Key, the surrounding 350‑hectare forest, and the rolling Roscommon countryside – a favourite spot for photographers.
- Canopy Walk – The 300‑metre timber‑and‑steel walkway arches nine metres above the forest floor, offering a bird’s‑eye perspective of ancient oak groves and the lake’s shimmering surface.
- Flora & Fauna – Keep an eye out for red squirrels, badgers, songbirds and seasonal wildflowers that carpet the woodland floor.
- Cultural Events – The tower’s concrete shell serves as a canvas for contemporary art and music. Highlights include the Before the Last Sun Sets performance (2019), the Night and Day music festival (annual May/June), and various light‑show installations.
