Twenty-seven places, and they do not sit in one corner. The heaviest cluster is Clonakilty, where four of them are within a short walk or a few minutes’ drive of each other: the Blackpudding Visitor Centre, back in the town since 2020; Michael Collins House on Emmet Square; Clonakilty Distillery in a former bank on the N71; and the family-run Michael Collins Centre outside town, whose 90-minute live storytelling show runs daily in summer and by booking the rest of the year.
East Cork carries much of the rest. Midleton appears twice, for the old Jameson site with the 31,618-gallon copper still in the yard and for the Midleton Distillery Experience, which reopened in 2024 after a Storm Babet flood closed it. Cobh Heritage Centre fills the restored Victorian railway station on Deepwater Quay, and out on the Old Head the squat 1804 signal tower nearest the Lusitania wreck now holds a museum to it.
In and around the city, Cork City Gaol stands behind castle-like walls above Sunday’s Well, the Glucksman is free at the UCC gate and runs exhibitions only, and Ballincollig Regional Park spreads over 55 hectares of Lee floodplain just west. The long drive is Allihies, out on Beara. Most of the list is indoor and holds up in bad weather; Allihies and Ballincollig want a dry day.

Cork City, cork
Cork City Gaol opened in 1824 as a prison hailed as the finest in the three kingdoms, and its castle-like walls above Sunday's Well held everyone from petty thieves to Constance Markievicz. After it closed, the Governor's House became home to 6CK, Cork's first radio station. Today it's a museum of waxwork cells, a famous 1923 escape, and early broadcasting.
Allihies, cork
The copper mines above Allihies drew around 1,600 workers at their 1840s peak and left the Beara skyline studded with Cornish engine houses. A waymarked trail links the ruins to Ballydonegan Beach, whose quartz sand is mine tailings, and the museum sits in the 1845 Methodist chapel built for the Cornish miners.
Ballincollig, cork
Ballincollig's centrepiece is its 55-hectare Regional Park, laid out across the canals and stone powder houses of an 18th-century gunpowder works on the River Lee. West of Cork city and named Ireland's Tidiest Town in 2024, it pairs that industrial heritage with playgrounds, pitches and miles of level riverside walking.

Four colour-coded loops, a Saturday parkrun, sports pitches and a skate park make it the town's back garden - free, and busy, with an estimated 660,000 visits in 2018.
Clonakilty, cork
The recipe behind Ireland's favourite black pudding dates to 1880, when Philip Harrington sold it from a Clonakilty butcher's shop; Edward Twomey bought the shop and the secret recipe in 1976. The visitor centre, back in the town since 2020, runs a self-guided audio tour past a glass gallery over the production line, ending with samples of the black, white and veggie puddings.
The Waterfront, cork
Clonakilty Distillery grows a heritage barley variety unseen in Ireland for over a century on the Scully family's 320-year-old farm, then turns it into single-pot-still whiskey, Minke Gin and vodka in three Italian copper stills. The Galley Head single malt and the hands-on Gin School are the draws. It sits in a former bank on the N71 in the town centre.
Deepwater Quay, cork
Cobh, or Queenstown as it was until 1922, was the busiest emigration port in Ireland and the Titanic's last port of call. Its restored Victorian railway station now holds The Queenstown Story, tracing convict ships, the Famine coffin ships, the Lusitania and the emigrants who sailed from here, with a genealogy desk for tracing your own roots.
University College Cork, cork
The Glucksman's three-storey building hangs over the River Lee at the gate of UCC, raised on a limestone podium to sit among the campus trees. O'Donnell + Tuomey's design won Best Public Building in Ireland in 2005 and made the Stirling Prize shortlist. Entry is free, with a suggested €5 donation, and the programme is exhibition-only, so there is always something new.
Midleton, cork
The 31,618-gallon copper pot still in the yard at Midleton is the largest ever built. Whiskey was distilled here from 1825 until 1975; the old stone buildings reopened as a visitor centre in 1992 and now draw around 100,000 people a year for the €30 tour through the maturation warehouses and a tasting. Bottles from the distillery's 1974 run sell for about €35,000, the most expensive Irish whiskey there is.
Clonakilty, cork
The Michael Collins Centre near Clonakilty is a family-run museum built around a 90-minute live storytelling show of Collins's life, one of Ireland's largest collections of his personal effects, and outdoor recreations of a War of Independence ambush and the Béal na Bláth site where he was shot. Regular shows run daily in summer; the rest of the year it opens for booked groups and tours only.

Michael Collins House is a museum on Clonakilty's Emmet Square dedicated to the 'Big Fella' and Ireland's fight for independence. Despite the name it isn't confirmed as a house Collins lived in, but it's a well-guided, hands-on museum running from the 1798 rebellion to the Civil War, and it works for families and rainy afternoons alike.

Midleton makes every drop of Jameson, Redbreast, Powers and Midleton Very Rare, triple-distilled in copper pot stills including the world's largest at 75,000 litres. Opened in 1975 and turning out 64 million litres a year, the site reopened its visitor centre in 2024 as the Midleton Distillery Experience after a Storm Babet flood closed it.
Mitchelstown, cork
Mitchelstown is a Georgian-planned market town of about 3,700 people in the Golden Vale of north Cork, laid out on a grid by the Kingston family. Its name is attached to the Mitchelstown show caves, which are actually 13 km away in Tipperary – discovered in 1833 and toured by booking. The town itself is a base for the Galtee and Ballyhoura mountains and a good run of local food producers.
Old Head, cork
This squat 1804 signal tower stands on the nearest land to where the Lusitania was torpedoed in 1915, and now holds a museum to the disaster. A wave-shaped sculpture in the garden lists every passenger and crew member who died, and the rooftop gives a full circle of the Atlantic and the Old Head cliffs.
Skibbereen, cork
In the restored Old Gasworks on Upper Bridge Street, this centre tells the Great Famine story of Skibbereen – one of the worst-hit towns in Ireland – through personal testimony and a virtual tour of the 1840s streets. It also covers the marine life of Lough Hyne and runs a genealogy service that has traced West Cork roots for visitors from around the world.
College Road, cork
You can walk into UCC’s Gothic quadrangle for free and see the Stone Corridor, which holds Ireland’s largest collection of Ogham stones. The Honan Chapel nearby has a celebrated set of Harry Clarke stained-glass windows, and the riverside Glucksman Gallery – also free – runs changing contemporary shows. Only the 75-minute Treasures Tour carries a charge.
Old Youghal Road, cork
Collins Barracks, Victoria Barracks until the British handed it over in 1922, is a working Irish Army base on the hill above Cork, and its small museum in the old Guard Room is the part you can visit. The draw is the Michael Collins collection: his great coat, rosary, two revolvers, his War of Independence medal and the diary he carried when he was killed on 22 August 1922. Opening is limited to weekday mornings, so ring ahead.
Cobh, cork
Standing on Casement Square in Cobh, the White Star Line Building is where the final 123 passengers boarded the Titanic in April 1912, tendered out to the ship in the harbour. Today it's the Titanic Experience, where a replica boarding card ties your visit to one real Queenstown passenger, ending with what became of them.
